This is an addendum for a previously submitted IQP(Interactive Qualifying Project). The previous IQP, the Assessing the Learning of Students with Disabilities in Informal Education, created a reference matrix, known as the SMIRF (Suggestions Matrix Incorporating Results from Findings) for assessment in informal education. In order to increase its utility to educators who may reference it, however, a demonstration of its use was deemed necessary. This addendum provides examples of use based on a case study. By creating a set of example assessments while using the SMIRF, this addendum seeks to enhance the utility and applicability of the SMIRF matrix

To enhance the learning experience of students in WPI\u27s mechatronics class, a pneumatic piston-spring assembly was designed and fabricated. Mathematical and bond graph analysis was performed to obtain theoretical metrics for the device\u27s operation. These theoretical metrics were compared with experimental results using sensors and data acquisition methods. The theoretical and experimental values were determined to have an acceptable deviation and can be reproduced by future students for the purpose of demonstrating the limits of theoretical metrics

Assessing the Learning of Students with Disabilities in Informal Education

Informal education occurs in a variety of different environments and informal learning centers present information to students in different ways. A method is needed to assess the learning progress of students with disabilities in informal education. Current methods of formal and informal assessment were examined through a literature review and interviews with various mainstream, special and informal educators. Information obtained was used to develop a list of recommendations for future project teams to use to create and apply a successful assessment method for students with disabilities in informal learning environments. Results are presented in matrix form and give recommendations for educators to consider before, during and after field trips to informal learning centers
